Alder Hey Media Statements

The following statements were issued this evening, 30th January 2001,
by Alder Hey Hospital, following the publication of the Redfern Inquiry.

Alder Hey Media Statement 30th January 2001 (1)

We on behalf of the Trust Board deeply regret the serious mistakes highlighted in the Redfern Report and apologise for the enormous distress caused to parents and their families, staff and the local community.

The Board takes full responsibility for what has happened and will now study the report in detail to determine what further action needs to be taken.

Clearly, however, changes must be made, particularly in the way we involve parents in decisions about their children.

With the help of parents and families and with the continuing support of our staff, changes have already begun. We will never forget the experience of the past year. The Trust Board must ensure that nothing like it happens again.

Alder Hey exists for the care of children and this should not be jeopardised in the aftermath of the Redfern Report. Now, for the sake of the thousands of children we care for, we must look to the future - a future that re-establishes public confidence in Alder Hey's reputation as a much-loved and trusted hospital.

Alder Hey Media Statement 30th January 2001 (2)

The Royal Liverpool NHS [National Health Service] Trust - Alder Hey - is pleased to confirm the Secretary of State's appointment of a new Trust Chair.

The new Chair Ms. Angela Jones, most recently Chair of the Liverpool Cardiothoracic Centre NHS Trust and has previously served as a Non-Executive Director for Liverpool Health Authority.

In welcoming her to the post, the acting Chair, Mrs. Judith Greensmith, said:

"I am very pleased that Angela Jones has been appointed to chair the Trust. I know she will work well with the strong management team and parents and families to continue the good work that has already started to rebuild the reputation of this much loved hospital."

"I sincerely hope that everyone who has been involved in the great distress of recent events will now be able to start to move on and find some peace."

Mrs. Greensmith, who was asked personally by Health Minister Lord Hunt, to come into the Trust last February to take control of the Organ Retention Issues, returns to Liverpool Health Authority to resume her position as Chairman.

The Trust's Acting Chief Executive, Tony Bell, stated that it had always been the intention that Judith would return to the Health Authority and that the current arrangements had been a temporary one.

He said:

"Judith came into the Trust at a troubled time and has worked tirelessly to address some highly complex issues for which there has been no blueprint. She has established a new Trust Board and an open and positive way of working. Judith has gained the respect of all the staff in the Trust and will be greatly missed. We wish her well in the future."

"We warmly welcome Angela Jones who brings much experience and commitment to the role."

The new arrangements will take effect from 30th January and will involve a brief period of handover.
