Vice-Chancellor's
Draft Opening Statement To The Press
Two years ago, following the publication of the Redfern report, my predecessor, Professor Philip Love, apologised on behalf of the University of Liverpool for the distress caused to those connected with organ retention by issuing the following press release:- "The University of Liverpool would wish to apologise most sincerely for the distress caused to so many people by the events of the past, and we express our deepest sorrow to all of those affected. We would wish to reassure parents that we will work very closely with the relevant hospitals in relation to the return of tissue and organs, all as recommended by the Chief Medical Officer .". Those words, and many subsequent apologies and statements of regret made by various members of the University's staff both publicly and when communicating individually with those affected, reflect genuinely held feelings of deep regret and I wish to be able today to echo and reinforce those previous statements. The University has always accepted the part it played in the issue of organ retention and sincerely welcomes the opportunity to mark the settlement of the Royal Liverpool Children's Hospital Litigation by now repeating its apology directly to all of the parents and repeating the expressions of regret for the ordeals of those caught up in these issues. The University is committed to the education of the future generation of clinicians by ensuring the integration and delivery of ethics teaching into healthcare programmes so that such a tragic situation should never occur in the future. It is unhelpful on an occasion such as this to talk in terms of blame or fault, there is no doubt that the situation was avoidable. The University is sorry for the distress and pain caused to families by what has occurred. We move forward
however motivated by the lessons of the past.
