PITY II Hopes Ruling Will Be Far-Reaching

Professor van VelzenPITY II Parents' Support Group is delighted with the decision reached by the General Medical Council Fitness to Practise Panel. Professor van Velzen did not appear at the hearing nor did he send any legal representation and treated it with what can only be described as contempt.

Parents were devastated to learn that Professor van Velzen was responsible for mass organ retention as well as incomplete record keeping and incomplete post mortem reports.

Many parents were left without a cause of death for their child(ren). The Foundation for the Study of Infant Death Syndrome (FSIDs) were also let down during his employment in Liverpool.

We would hope that this ruling will reach further than the UK and that other countries will consider the damaging effect he had before they offer him their employ. We are only sorry that the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) felt unable to proceed with a case to prosecute.

PITY II now feels that some justice has been achieved and this may help in some way to rebuild the damaging affect it has had on so many lives.

PITY II (Parents who have Interred Their Young Twice) is the parents' support group set up in the wake of the organ retention scandal
at Alder Hey Hospital (Liverpool, UK). It aims to provide self help support and advice to affected families.
