"Get It Right!" Says PITY II Chairman "They have got to get it right this time" insists PITY II Chair, John O'Hare, as the current moratorium, imposed by the Retained Organs Commission, is expected to end soon. "Possibly the worst thing for families has been the waiting and/or not knowing", he said. "It is important that they [families] will be able to lay their loved ones to rest; but it must be done right!" "The Retained Organs Commission was established to stop families having to go through two, three and even four funerals", he explained. "The situation was intolerable. We could not go on with things as they were, it was so distressing for everyone" "Alder Hey has got so many families to deal with, and so many organs to return that it is important that everything is handled with sensitive care. The hospital must recognise the needs of the families - especially those who have been waiting for so long. They have got to get it right this time." "I hope they will handle the return of organs as sensitively as possible. We have had a number of meetings with them. They seem to be putting things in place, but we can only wait and see if that will happen." The Process It is expected that the process of returning all of the organs could take about six months or so - although it is envisaged that families who have been waiting longest will get their children's organs back first. Alder Hey will write to families, who have made enquiries, to establish what their wishes are and will endeavour to respond positively wherever and whenever possible. Organs will be released to four sets of parents each day; two in the morning and two in the afternoon. Two special rooms have been established, at Alder Hey, to help parents deal with the release of their children's organs.
