What Has The Group Achieved So Far?

Michael Redfern QCIn a very short time the group has achieved a huge amount. The most notable achievement has been the setting up of the Independent Inquiry, chaired by Michael Redfern QC, which has just started meeting and will report by the summer.

Without massive pressure from parents this would not have happened. Alder Hey Hospital have stopped retaining organs, and are changing their post mortem consent forms to ensure that what is intended is clear. Some parents will be involved in this.

One law has been changed already as a result of the scandal. The law on cremation has been changed so that if your child was buried you can now cremate their organs when they are returned to you. Before this change you could only cremate the organs if you had cremated their body. If the body had been buried then you had to bury the organs.

PITY II (Parents who have Interred Their Young Twice) is the parents' support group set up in the wake of the organ retention scandal
at Alder Hey Hospital (Liverpool, UK). It aims to provide self help support and advice to affected families.
