Concluding Remarks - John O'Hare PITY II Chair

PITY II Chair, John O'HareGood afternoon

For those of you who may not know me my name is John O'Hare and I am the chair of PITY II parents support group

First of all I would like to thank, most sincerely, the members of St. Helens Council, their leader Councillor Marie Rimmer and the people of St. Helens for these lovely memorials to our children.

Out thanks also go to Dave Bielewski, the manager of St. Helens Cemetery who has designed and built the Tree of Life and its Garden and to his staff.

To the mayor of St. Helens, Councillor Tony Brown; to those who contributed with poems and readings

And a special thank you to the local children who took part in today's service.

Thank you, too, to Father Kevin McLoughlin, the Reverend Colin Smith and Father Sean Kirwin for being here today to help make this a special occasion

And also Sheila and the parents who have helped to plan and put this memorial service together.

There is no need for me to remind you of the events of the past that have brought us to this day because that is why we are all here. We cannot change what has happened in the past but we can do our very best to make sure that those terrible events that have brought so much sorrow and pain to so many families cannot happen again.

The memorial plaque is inscribed with the words "Never Again". We have been promised NEVER AGAIN and as you all know we have maintained that changes in the law are necessary to ensure that NEVER AGAIN means just that.

A few months ago the Department of Health issued a consultation document on the proposed Law Reform. PITY II sent our copy to all our membership requesting that everyone respond to it. We have waited a long time for this and I would just like to ask all of you, please - take this opportunity to make your views known. If you need any more information about this, PITY II is here to help.

Once again I would like to thank everyone involved in making today possible and all of the parents, families and friends for coming here today to take part in this memorial and for your continuing support. And for the continuing support of St. Helens council who have supported us from the very beginning.

I hope you will visit the memorials often.

Thank You.
