Introduction
Today inspires us to look to the future and make sure that we see things through. So this can never happen again. The memorials begin with the Tree of Life. As the tree blossoms we remember the future; as the blossoms fall, we remember the past. The tree will have a rockery garden as its base with a planting of forget-me-nots that grow every spring. These are some of the ideas form parents. In time, over the next few months, this memorial and its surrounding area will become a remembrance garden to our children. Anyone can come and sit here and enjoy its peace and tranquility; look at its beauty and smell the wonderful flowers that will be planted here. We hope, also, that they will give thought to our children, and remember them. The memorial for the local children of St. Helens, Billinge, Newton, Rainhill and Prescot, is situated to the left of the building behind you - it is for all the local children, including those who were taken straight to heaven, those who have no grave. We hope that it gives their parents some comfort. These wonderful memorials are unique. They are the first of their kind in the United Kingdom, but hopefully they will not be the last. We hope that this inspires others to recognise what happened to their children. We also hope that other local councils will take the initiative from St. Helens, and give every effort into helping parents. I would now like to introduce councilor Marie Rimmer, the leader of St. Helens council.
