Suspension Extended for Professor van Velzen
The General Medical Council has extended the suspension of Professor Dick van Velzen until August 2002. Some people fear that this will delay the hearing which will decide his long-term future. If his hearing, before the professional conduct committee, is delayed by 12 months then it will be approxiamtely three years after the issues began to be realised. Professor van Velzen is one of the Pathologists involved with the organ retention issues at Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool, UK. He was suspended after the publication of the Redfern Inquiry [The Royal Liverpool Children's Inquiry Report], which was published on the 30th of January 2001. Ian Cohen, PITY II solicitor, expressed concern about the extension but pointed out that PITY II had not heard from the GMC regarding this matter and was not, therefore, in an informed position to comment further at this point in time.
