Fitness to Practise Panel Meeting Dr. van Velzen’s registration has been suspended by the General Medical Council’s Interim Orders Committee since 2nd February 2001 {three days after publication of the Inquiry Report}. This suspension has been renewed and extended in the High Court and is due to expire on the 1st of August 2005. The General Medical Council hopes to have completed the substantive hearing of the allegations against Dr. van Velzen by that date. To this end, a Fitness to Practise Panel meeting has been listed for three weeks commencing on 6th June, 2005, with a time estimate of 15 (fifteen) days. The proposed venue is the General Medical Council’s offices in Manchester. Field, Fisher Waterhouse solicitors may already have contacted some of the families who had previously given statements to the police to see if they were prepared to attend the GMC hearing. As the hearing is to be held in public, any children’s names will be anonymous so they are not identifiable in order to protect the privacy of the children and their families.. PITY II will inform its membership of the outcome of this hearing on this site and in the final newsletter, which will be published sometime during June or July.
