North Hertfordshire Villages Research Group
Once again, the above group will be holding a meeting in Kelshall, Hertfordshire, on 14th March in Kelshall Village Hall starting at 10 am. I am hoping that this year we will get even a larger attendance of Hagger Researchers.
I will be giving a talk on the Hagger One Name Study and its connections with North Hertfordshire. In a relatively short talk I cannot hope to cover all the ground we have already covered in our quest for Hagger information, but I will be doing my best. Those of us who have time, retire after the meeting to the Rose & Crown in Therfield for lunch.
If you would like to have more details, please send me an email and I will send you the agenda.
Canadian Expeditionary Force
Recently whilst visiting the National Archives at Kew in the UK I had the opportunity to search the Canadian Government archives of those who served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in World War 1. I was surprised to find only nine Haggers and even more surprised to find that they were all born in England.
Who were they:
Anthony Haggar, born 27 March 1895, Weston, Hertfordshire, a farmer. Next of kin mother Elizabeth, living in Stevenage, Hertfordshire. No other information found.
Charles Henry Haggar, born 28 Aug 1898, London, a blacksmith. Next of kin sister Mary Elizabeth Haggar, living in Ontario, Canada. No other information found.
Leo Haggar, born 10 April 1885, Stowmarket, Suffolk, a tinsmith. Next of kin father George William Haggar, living at Smiths Falls, Ontario, Canada. We have a little information about this family and it appears they started off as Hagar. Leo was the son of George William Haggar and Mary Amelia Turner, George was one of at least 5 children of William Haggar and Hannah Davey.
William Haggar, born 6 May 1883, Surrey, a Gardner. Next of kin father, Lavender Hagger of Farnham, Surrey. William was in fact born William Lavender and his father Lavender was the son of a Hagger marriage with his parents being William Draper Hagger and Elizabeth Hester Hagger; William is a descendent of Edward Hagger born in about 1763 in Therfield and Elizabeth is a descendent of Richard Hagger, born about 1720 and buried at Therfield in 1880. The name Lavender probably came from Sarah Lavender, Richard’s wife.
