The Russian 8th and 47th Armies have been advancing on all fronts since 2nd February. The speed of the most recent advance threatens to cut off Army Group South including the 1st and 2nd SS Panzer Divisions which are attempting to withdraw over the Dniesti river. German control of the bridges over the Dniesti will allow them to withdraw and hold the Russian advance. Russian control of the bridges will cut off the German escape route and secure an opportunity to continue the advance.

Following the D Day landings Allied forces have been advancing across France. The German army is withdrawing and attempting to slow the Allied advance at every possible opportunity. The bridge at St. Everoult over the Touques river is the last one intact in the area. The retreating German forces are also taking every opportunity to ensure their financial security on the way home!
