On 22nd April 1809 Wellesley returned with the British army to Lisbon. Marshal Victor's army stood at Merida in Spain near the Portuguese border at Badajoz. Marshal Soult held the northern Portuguese city of Oporto.
In May Wellesley marched north to deal with Soult. After crossing the Douro, Wellesley defeated the French at Oporto.
By June Wellesley had forced Soult out of Portugal and was free to move against a fresh French army under Victor. Wellesley crossed into Spain and joined forces with the Spanish general Cuesta at Oropesa.
Wellesley intends for Blunte to demoralise the French further by intercepting their pay.

Following the winter of 1810 which Marshal Massena's Army of Portugal spent before the lines of Torres Vedras, the French retreated into Spain leaving a garrison in the Portuguese border fortress of Almeida. Wellington followed up with his British Portuguese army and laid siege to Almeida, which had to be taken before he continued his advance into Spain.
Anticipating that Massena will advanced from Ciudad Rodrigo to relieve Almeida, Wellington has sent his Exploring Officers to discover when the advance will take place and in what strength.
Unfortunately Major Wogan, an Engineer and senior Exploring Officer has been captured by the French. Wogan has detailed knowledge of the British strength and positions. Wellington cannot afford to have such knowledge fall into French hands. Accordingly he selects an officer to take a small group of men behind the French lines to recover Major Wogan.

The British dispatched an expeditionary force, originally intended to occupy part of Spanish America, to the Iberian Peninsula in 1808. In the next year, a larger contingent under Arthur Wellesley, later duke of Wellington, followed. Elements of the Spanish army held Cadiz, the only major city not taken by the French, but the countryside belonged to the guerrillas, who held down 250,000 of Napoleon's best troops under Marshal Soult.
In 1812 Wellington advanced as far as Madrid. However with winter setting in again in October and the failure to take Burgos he decided discretion was the better part of valour and retreated from the centre of Spain. It is clear he will soon go on the offensive again.
Both sides need the guerrillas working for them and an opportunity to secure the services of the renowned bandit El Matarife has just presented itself.
