Corless - "How could you forget Trevor Corless, that nifty England centre and Mose man through and through" offered one fan's e-mail. (Trevor is gratified that his public remember him. Unfortunately he has asked us to point out that, not for the first time in his life, he has been mistaken for his brother, Barrie.) Whilst TC concedes that Barrie was indeed silky skilled and an England international, Trevor, apparently, is "by far the better drinker and the more handsome of the two". For those that remember, Trevor was a Prop forward for Birmingham (the REAL Birmingham RFC), Moseley and N. Mids, to name but a few. He was also an England trialist and played for Midlands Division. Most recently he is the chap who makes the announcements at MFC home matches.........It should also be mentioned that TC has been an outstanding M&J coach for more than a decade, and Barrie (Action photo here) (10 caps for England 1976-8, the first full time Director of Rugby at Gloucester in 1995) is now part of the First XV Coaching set-up at Moseley). Les Cusworth to quote RugbySpeakers.co.uk - "Les was a creative fly half during a period when the England coaches were looking for someone who would play strictly to their plan, a greater trust in the skills of their playmaker would have produced better results and more caps for Les! He scored 947 points for Leicester in 365 games, after playing for Wakefield and Moseley and had a worldwide reputation as a sevens player, coaching England to triumph in the inaugural sevens world cup in Scotland in 1993. He was at Worcester, but is now working freelance. A most friendly personality and an extremely popular speaker". follow his progress here

John Davidson - Described in a Sunday Times article on the Leicester side that won the first League title as "An athletic lock who joined the Tigers from Moseley. A middle jumper with fantastic hands, but his work in the oil industry limited his rugby career"

Sam Doble; England full back in 72/73 and record points scorer for Moseley. After his sad and untimely death from cancer in 1977, 15 internationals turned out for a memorial match against Moseley, played to a packed Reddings. See the History section of this site for details of the memorial game

"Apart from being one of English rugby's most able administrators - it was he who supplied the nuts and bolts for the conversion to league rugby, countrywide.A Moseley man. Having joined the club more than 40 years ago, played for them, administered for them in every capacity in the club, including chairman and president. Evans has always been able to take the forward view and he was immediately at hand to organise the first national fixtures, on an RFU-supplied computer in his bedroom in Sutton Coldfield."

Paul Gisbourne, currently Moseley 1st XV front row coach.

John Goodwin - Keith Bracey writes - "Another from the Dixonians conveyor belt. The story goes that he was playing for Camp Hill Colts who were heavily beaten by Dixonians whom he then asked if he could join. Dixonians, realising he had a 'higher calling' recommended him to Moseley and he played on the left-wing for Moseley throughout the 1980's and early 1990's. He was unlucky that at the same time and in the same position was one of the legends of the English game, Rory Underwood, and was never capped by his country. He did tour New Zealand with England in 1984 along with another Moseley player Ian Metcalfe, however he was not capped on a disastrous tour, during which one of the Test Matches was lost by over 40 points.
John became a little disillusioned with the game following his lack of International recognition and retired early. A great loss to the game in general and Moseley in particular."

Andy Hall - Awarded 1st XV Tie (for 15 appearances in a season) prior to 1999 - moved to Glasgow 2001 - follow his progress here

Another Moseley player who had links with Junior Club Dixonians, being the coaching inspiration behind their North Midlands Cup winning teams of the 1970's,on one famous occasion beating Stourbridge. John Liley - scored 24 points in the 79-10 record Cup win against Liverpool St. Helens in 97/98 Mark Linnett, who should have had many more appearances than his single England cap. Competing for a place with someone who goes on to win 112 caps does make life difficult!

Alistair Kerr (1991-96) - Most points in a career: 364, Most conversions in a career: 38 - Most penalties in a career: 61 - Most penalties in a match: 8 (vs. Waterloo 17 February 1996 - league record)Joint most drop goals in a match: 2 (vs. Plymouth, 21 February 1996 - Most drop goals in a career: 5

Ian Metcalfe - Keith Bracey writes - "A fine full-back, Moseley captain and Cambridge Blue of the 1980s. Ian played full-back at King Edward's School and went up to Cambridge in 1976 where he gained his Blue. Returning to play for Moseley, he was a fearless full-back and captain, often a little too brave for his own good. His career was ended prematurely with a serious injury during a match at the Reddings. Having studied Law at Cambridge, a career in the law beckoned and he is now a prominent and respected local solicitor with International Birmingham practice Wragge & Co. Ian coached with Moseley M&J for many years and his son is a fine fly-half, being a member of Leicester Tigers' Academy side and having represented England Schools."

Graham writes..."I had 13 great years at Moseley and had a fantastic partnership with 'Sumo' Linnet with a massive influence from Dave Protherough (God rest his soul) I was fortunate enough to play for England U23s and Scotland whilst a Moseley player, I made around 240 1st XV appearances and played in some of Moseley's most memorable games. Moseley v Bath 4-3 @ the Reddings in the cup and Cardiff v Moseley away 10-14 plus many many more. I am now the England assistant coach for the RFUW after a spell at the Worcester/England rugby academy. It would be good to see my name along side so many great players. Kind Regards to anyone at Moseley who has a memory long enough to know me."

Rudi Smith - a flying winger for Moseley from Dixonians - his company now supports our M&Js

Malcolm Swain - Played in Two Finals; - 1972, 1979; Keith Bracey writes - "I had been introduced to the joys of rugby by another Welshman, Malcolm Swain, who played centre with England's Barrie Corless at that time. Malcolm had taught Maths at George Dixon Grammar and instilled in me a love of the game that lasts until this day. Malcolm was probably the best Welsh centre not to be capped by Wales. Some said it was because he played in England for Moseley, and there is probably some truth in that, as the Welsh selectors did not see him week in week out. However he did have other fine Welsh players to compete with such as Ray Gravell and Steve Fenwick . Malcolm Swain went on to a distinguished teaching career at Solihull School where I am sure he inculcated into his charges that same love of the game he gave me all those years ago."

Mike Teague - - British Lion in 1989 & 93, featured in Bill McClaren's best ever world XV - won 27 caps overall, 5 of them while playing for Moseley in 1992-93.

Alan Thomas, Moseley's flying welshman, in the halcyon days of flying welshmen, kept the Reddings in shape for years, Alan is the man shown "closing the gate of the Reddings for the last time", whenever the Beeb repeat that old clip. Also father of current first XV fly half, Ollie.

Graham Viney - Keith Bracey writes - "Another player from the Dixonians conveyor belt of talent was scrum-half Graham Viney, the most talented player I ever played with and probably the best player Dixonians ever produced. Graham was one of those talented players and sportsmen it all came too easily to. When he could be bothered there was no finer scrum-half in the land. I believe he was voted Moseley Player of the Year in one of the two seasons he played for the club in the mid-eighties."

Dave Warren - was there ever a year when Dave didn't figure large in the Moseley story - currently Chief Executive, of course.

N. Webber - Awarded 1st XV Tie (for 15 appearances) prior to 1999
