Invitation

Following the success of the third event in Cardiff last December, you are invited to participate in PECTEL4 - the 4th Workshop on Parallel and Evolutionary Computation in Telecoms - which will be held at the University of Essex, Colchester, UK on Monday 20th and Tuesday 21st December 1999. The workshop has a very informal style, with delegates encouraged to ask questions during presentations and no published proceedings, to encourage the free exchange of both early ideas and current research. Moreover, there is no fee for attendance at the workshop itself, while charges for accommodation and the workshop dinner have been kept as low as possible.

Please advise Mark C. Sinclair at the University of Essex as soon as possible if you can make it, whether you can present any material, and if so, provide him with a preliminary title.

Attendees

So far, the following people have indicated they will be attending:

K. Y. Au (Essex) Erwin Bonsma (BT) David Corne (Reading)

Presentations

Both an overhead projector and a computer projection system are available in the ESE Seminar Room (4S.6.28) where the workshop will be held. A dual boot Windows 98/Linux PC can be used, or presenters using the computer projector may wish to bring their own laptops.

Accommodation

Accomodation will be provided by the 4-crown Wivenhoe House Hotel , on campus, at a cost of GBP 49.50 per night B&B; you will need to ring the hotel direct, and as soon as possible, to make a booking on +44 1206 863666 (Fax: +44 1206 868532). This is below their advertised rates, and so you will need to quote 'PECTEL4' to get this price. Please let Mark C. Sinclair at the University of Essex know if you make a booking, and for which nights, to help him in ongoing negotiations with the hotel!

Parking

Those attendees travelling to the University by car and staying at Wivenhoe House Hotel will be able to park their cars at the hotel. Anyone else travelling to the University by car (and wishing to avoid 'Pay and Display' or wheel clamping!) will need to obtain a parking permit from my secretary Lynne Murrell (lynnem@essex.ac.uk; +44 1206 872418); this can be faxed or posted.

Workshop Dinner

The workshop dinner will be on Monday 20th December, 1999 at Wivenhoe House Hotel and will cost GBP 16.75. It will be a fairly informal meal - dress smart casual (or better!) - with no speeches, and represents a good opportunity to get to know some of the other attendees. Please advise Mark C. Sinclair at the University of Essex direct, and as soon as possible, if you want to attend the dinner.

Payment for the dinner will be added to their room bill for residents (please check the Hotel has remembered to do this when you check out); non-residents will need to pay at reception (either before or after the meal). Drinks with the meal (including wine) can be purchased from the bar on a cash basis.

Lunches & Coffee Breaks

Attendees will be able to purchase lunch (on a cash basis) from either the Top Bar and Bistro (12.00 - 2.30) or the Blues Cafe (9.00 - 4.00); coffee breaks will also be held in the Blues.

Mailing List

While as many people as possible have been contacted, not all potential participants may have been e-mailed directly: please therefore extend the invitation to your students and colleagues, and send Mark C. Sinclair at the University of Essex their e-mail addresses for further mailings.

Travel

Travel information is available for both the University of Essex campus and WivenHoe House Hotel . The workshop sessions will take place in room 4S.6.28 on Floor 6 of the Department of Electronic Systems Engineering (ESE) on Square 4 of the University - see the campus guide. Wivenhoe House Hotel, where accomodation is offered and the Workshop Dinner will be held, is a five minutes walk from ESE.
