The Works of WILLIAM GILBERT Snr.

The list from which these titles are taken has been supplied by Brian Jones, Librarian to the Gilbert and Sullivan Society, to whom I am indebted.  Mr Jones himself would not claim that it is exhaustive.

There has been a recent revival of interest in the works of Gilbert Snr., not least as they give us an insight into the literary style of W. S. Gilbert, his son, who also acted as illustrator for some of his father's books.  Where any of these works has recently been republished a hyperlink will be provided to bookstores able to supply that title.

Shirley Hall Asylum
Or the Memoirs of a Monomaniac
 (1863)

Reputedly Gilbert's first novel.  Written entirely in the first person, this tale adopts what will be come a familiar Gilbert Snr. format of a number of individual tales within the framework of an all encompassing story.
