Double jeopardy law ushered out  Monday 4th April, 2005

The Court of Appeal can now quash an acquittal (a Not Guilty verdict) and order a retrial when "new and compelling" evidence is produced. It applies to 30 serious crimes - including murder, rape, Class A drug offences and war crimes

Anyone can 'NOW' be tried for the same crime again

Will this 'Double jeopardy' law apply to the acquittal verdicts when a judge stops a trial before all the evidence is heard by a jury

I think not - The families of people killed ---  have no faith in English law

The legal principle which 'DID' prevent people being tried for the same crime twice has been scrapped in England and Wales.

It should now be a hope for many families when the police are acquitted for deaths in custody when evidence is ignored to protect the police from a conviction. Or many other ways the police avoid being charged and found guilty

Will this new law help families of people killed by the police - I think not

The "double jeopardy", has existed for around 800 years.
The Court of Appeal can now quash an acquittal and order a retrial when "new and compelling" evidence is produced.

The change will apply retrospectively, so someone could face a second trial if evidence such as DNA material, new witnesses or a confession came to light.

A Crown Prosecution Service spokeswoman said: "There has to be new evidence which was not available at the time of the original trial. (Or one would hope evidence that was ignored by the judge or the CPS)

The Bar Council's former chairman Matthias Kelly QC said the law changes could "lead to prosecutions routinely seeking a second bite of the cherry, if a case flopped first time for good reason".
