This page covers all collections on the web of logical or Latin material manuscripts that I could find. Please email me with details of any other sites. I include a link to the introductory page, as well as direct links to the first full-size images (ignoring frontispieces and other such trivia). Beware that some of these are VERY LARGE - up to 3M - and are not suitable for dial-up connections.
The easiest way to navigate is to note the URL for the full sized image, and edit it. That way you can get to page 100 directly rather than the tortuous methods required by some sites. Also if you are adept at html and Javascript you can download large chunks -once again beware the bandwidth this will generate, and also beware the copyright restrictions which are clearly laid out on most sites (e.g. here).
If you cut down the size to 25% using Paint, you can get the size down to a sixteenth, i.e. a more manageable 200k, which is about the smallest you can get without it looking like a digitised image. I am experimenting with ways of loading these images into web pages. Here is one result - chapters one and two of the Landévennec Gospels.
The Early Manuscripts Imaging Project (completed in September 2000 at Oxford University) is an excellent resource for anyone interested in early manuscripts. The site is not particularly easy to navigate. I enclose some links to bits of interest below. The link to start with is the list of all collections which lists all the manuscripts rather than collection by collection (otherwise you are left picking through lots of separate links). Manuscripts of interest include:
An encylopaedia in Latin MS 238a. Domenico Bandini (d. 1418), Fons memorabilium uniuersi in a set of five volumes possibly from an original six (lacking Part V Book i): made c. 1444-8 for William Gray (d. 1478), later Bishop of Ely, during his travels in Germany and Italy, and bequeathed with his library to Balliol College. The various scribes and illuminators, perhaps working largely at Cologne, display an international range of influences: Dutch, Italian, English, even Spanish. Illuminated initials and borders sometimes include Gray's coat of arms. The first full size image is here
Latin Gospels with beast-headed evangelist portraits made at Landévennec, Brittany, late 9th or early 10th century, supplemented in the 11th century with conventional portraits in the style of Northern France or Flanders; given by bishop Leofric, d. 1072, to Exeter Cathedral, where lists of lands, relics, etc., in Old English were incorporated at the start. First full size image is here
Latin works on science and mathematics by Roger Bacon and others, assembled from several 13th-century booklets of which the last (fols. 110-122) is partly of palimpsest parchment. Marginal annotations by John Dee, who bought the volume in 1556 from John Leland's library; owned in the 1620s by Sir Robert Cotton. First full size image is here
Institutio ad logicam: the second of a three-volume set of academic disputations in Latin, of which the last (MS. Digby 118, fol. 426r) appears to be signed by the Jesuit Antonio Mangilio (1576-1644) and dated Rome 1609. First full size image is here
De causis et processu uniuersitatis a prima causa by Albertus Magnus. A Latin metaphysical treatise, in an English copy of the 15th century, with penwork initials. First full size image is here
Do visit this website, maintained by Roger Pearse. An excellent source of images, although it is limited mostly to a single author (Tertullian), and a single work (Apologeticum). But nothing wrong with that: it means we can compare exactly the same text over six centuries. An added benefit is that they are all available both in modern Latin typeface, and English translations. It is beautifully maintained, with a vast list of sources and references (e.g. all the Tertullian codices), plus an entertaining account of his battles with the British Library. I have mounted a couple of his pages here.
Balliol College, Oxford. Manuscript 79 15th century (1442-4). Contains various works by Lactantius, and the Apologeticum (here) in 46 chapters, together with marginalia by William of Malmesbury. First full size image is here.
Manuscript 42, S. Nicholas-Hospital/Cusanusstift, Bernkastel-Kues. Colour photographs of the complete Tertullian portion of medieval manuscript (?or 15th century?) of the Cusanusstift at Bernkastel in the Rhineland. First full size image is here.
College of St. Isidore, Rome, MS 1/29 Colour photographs of the entire parchment manuscript of Tertullian's Apologeticum at the College of St. Isidore in Rome. Probably 12th-13th c., but may be later. First full size image is here.
Seitenstetten. Manuscript 30 Colour photographs of the manuscript of the Apologeticum held at Seitenstetten, Austria. Prob. 15C. First full size image is here.
Images of complete Editio Princeps, Bernardinus Benalius, Venice (prior to 1493). First full size image is here.
For those interested in logic and metaphysics, this has some unusual and interesting material, including the best find to date, one of the earliest known manuscripts of Boethius' minor commentary on the Perihermaneias. I am doing some work on this, more later.
Boethius' translation of Aristotle's Perihermaneias. First full size image (800k) image is here. Smaller 200k images start here. A page in the Logic Museum about the text here.
Aristotle's Metaphysics. Much, though far from all, of William of Moerbeke's translation of the Metaphysics. First full-size (800k) image is here. Smaller 200k images start here. A page in the Logic Museum about the text here.
These can be found here. The whole of Book II of Bonaventura's commentary on Peter Lombard's Sentences. Again, I am doing some work on these, more later. First full size image is here. Beware (as happens with these collections) the image numbering is out of kilter with the folio number.
There are two copies of the Gutenberg Bible here. First full size image is here (paper copy). And did you know: "It took the skin from about 170 calves to print a single Bible on calf's skin"?
