In the early 20th century , Haggs Farm near Underwood , Nottinghamshire , was home to Miss Jessie Chambers , the farmer's daughter who became the "Miriam" of D.H.Lawrence's novel "Sons and Lovers".
The small secluded farmhouse is on sloping field three miles north of the town of Eastwood .
Today , as for many years now , the famous old farmhouse stands unoccupied and decaying .
The Haggs Farm Preservation Society was established to ensure the preservation of Haggs Farm . Through the years the Society has urged local authorities and the farm's owners to properly maintain and restore the Grade 2 Listed Building and has researched and recorded much of the history of the farm ,its buildings , setting , owners and tenants .
Due to the now seriously declined world-wide and national and financial circumstances it is unlikely that private or public monies will become available for a venture such as Haggs Farm's renovation : and observing the general public's ( at best ) lack of interest in D.H.Lawrence or the Haggs Farm , it is most unlikely that the society's prime objective can be realised in the forseeable future .
Special Acknowledgment . . . . This website wishes to express its particular and sincere thanks to founding members of the society . Anne Howard ( a niece of Jessie Chambers ) and its chairman , Mr.Clive Leivers ( the Chairman ) - for their long years of unstinting , ever hopeful , efforts to the Haggs Farm cause .
Sincere thanks to all who have visited this website .
