Did your ancestors live in East Yorkshire; in Howden or the surrounding villages such as Asselby, Gilberdyke or North Cave Or perhaps in the new port of Goole, the town of Snaith or the villages of Whitgift or Rawcliffe Susan Butler, local historian and co-author of the book "Howden, an East Riding Market town" now offers a professional family history research service for these areas.

About Susan Butler

Susan has her own website http://www.btinternet.com/~susanebutler/index.html about her home village of Eastrington, near Howden and since setting it up? has had many queries from people with ancestors in the Howdenshire and Goole areas who have asked for help tracing their family trees. Where she already had the information she has given it freely, and will continue to do so, but is now in a position to offer a professional service tracing the family history of those whose forebears came from the parts of the East Riding and of the old West Riding of Yorkshire in which she has an interest.

Susan has an honours degree in medieval and modern history, a teaching certificate, has published several books on the local history of the area and has written many newpaper articles about the Goole and Howden locality. She presently lectures on local history to adult students and has also run courses and lectured on how to research family history.

Sources

She has an extensive collection of local history material which she has amassed over the years from visits to local archives as well as books, pamphlets, old photographs, wills, newspaper cuttings, monumental inscription booklets and CDs.

She also has access to all the censuses, local newspaper files, trade directories and to most local parish records and is ideally placed to visit the archives in both Beverley and York. Over the past 30 years she has built up a personal knowledge of what information is available for the local area and is now willing to put this information to good use to help you find out more about your family connections with the area.

She offers a full family tree search back through the generations or maybe just help with your particular 'brick wall'.

She is also willing to search out and photograph your ancestor's gravestone, house, farm, school or street or to provide you with background information about the village or town where they lived. She also has a large collection of old photographs of the area so that you can see what the town or village looked like when your ancestors lived there.

Contact her direct or visit her website for more information.

Prices

Charges are £15 per hour for research and digital images of old photos can usually be provided at £5 each. Susan would be happy to give you a free quotation if you would like to contact her by email with details of the information you already have and what you would like to find out.
