SCOTLAND LIVE - BANDS TO WATCH!!

BEATNIC PRESTIGE - DOUBTFIRE CD SINGLE

Now kind of reissued as a three-tracker, it's time for a reassessment. The title track opens up proceedings on a blistering wave of racing indie songwriting and arranging that's just so immediate, as this driving whirlwind of urgent lead vocals delivers a song with passion and power, while around it all the band provide a cyclical guitar hook, driving rhythms and high-flying harmony vocals. But, in addition to the raging verses of observational lyricism, there's a quite complex but absolutely memorable chorus that really takes hold and has you singing along with the thing for ages after the track's ended. It's a slice of driving indie commercialism at its finest and a song that should propel this band to greater recognition, for sure. Up next is “Any Other Boy”, which has a decided air of early Sergeant to it, only much more of an impassioned intensity to its lead vocal, every bit as urgent as the lead track, and still possessing a great guitar hook, this time more in the vein of The Smiths than anything as the combination of lead vocal and soaring harmony vocals provide the spirit over the driving rhythmic backing. In so many ways it's like a cross between the aforementioned bands, only angrier and faster, yet still absolutely memorable as a stirring slice of indie-pop for all the right reasons. The final track is “Whizzkid”, and it's another gem that follows the paths already laid down, only this time with more of a raw appeal to it, if anything altogether angrier with a positively snarling vocal, but backed by a sea of ringing lead guitar and driving riffs as the rattling rhythms propel the track on its intense vocal drive as the pace fairly rattles and rolls but a song that has a decided anthemic quality to it. The whole song positively wreaks of first album-era Stranglers and that's what makes it even more sensational than it is. There's a lead guitar break that really sets the adrenaline rising while the whole song just flies along in unstoppable fashion, the mix of memorable songwriting, urgency and solid delivery, a positive joy to behold. Three tracks that ooze excellence from every pore.
