2001

Paul’s Malt in Hithercroft Road, built 1958, is demolished, ending the malting industry which had been key to Wallingford for hundreds of years – with at one time at least 17 maltings in the town. The 2001 census indicates that the population of Wallingford is 6,842, with just over 3000 individual dwellings. Farmers' markets are held, taking advantage of the 1663 charter which allows two markets a week.

2002

The first BunkFest music festival is held. A record crowd for AFC Wallingford of 2350 sees the team beat AFC Wimbledon 3-0. Frank H. Jenkins garage shuts after 90 years - the building is later demolished during building of St Alban's car park.

2003

Flood. Wallingford gets its first zebra crossing on Station Road. Tony Rowse, founder of Rowse Honey (in 1954) dies, aged 86. Peter Cathcart Wason, cognitive psychologist, also dies in Wallingford.

2004

Wallingford Castle Meadows are reopened to the public. CCTV cameras are introduced to the town. Nancy Carline, artist, dies in Wallingford.

2005

A new Waitrose store is opened at the main crossroads, after discussions going back to 2000. During the building of the store, remains from St Martin's Church are uncovered. Fugro, a geological investigation company opens its headquarters on the Hithercroft Road, anticipating to employ 400 staff.

2006

Work starts on a boathouse for the Oxford University Boat Club at Chalmore. Oxford University have used the Wallingford stretch of The Thames for around 50 years. James McClure, a crime author living in Wallingford, dies. 50 people are involved in a brawl in the town centre.

2007

Flooding in July. "Wallingford Magazine" folds after 32 years, to be replaced by "Windows on Wallingford".

2008

Lady Evelyn Barbirolli (born Evelyn Rothwell in Wallingford), oboeist and wife of conductor John Barbirolli, dies aged 97. Excavations take place around Wallingford in the summer, uncovering what may be a 12th century tannery on the Kinecroft.
