Mauthausen Extermination Camp

Liberation at Mauthausen Camp - May 8, 1945

Arrivals at Mauthausen were processed in the large central square. This was also used for roll call and disinfection - large scale hosing down with chemicals to kill lice.

'Raspberry Picking'

In Mauthausen the sick were often given a tin cup and told that they were going to do 'light work' picking berries. While being marched along, they were shot by the SS - supposedly while 'trying to escape'. The SS liked these 'raspberry picking details' because guards who shot prisoners trying to escape were often given time off in reward.
