Jet
Propulsion
Twelve or thirteen years after the MAN
cover World War II had come and gone. The German V-1 "Buzz
Bomb" with the pulse jet was well known and immediately after the
war a "hobby version" was under way by several individuals.
Most popular of all was the Dyna Jet, shown in the picture.
The sound was a lease-breaking 200
Hz roar with volume as great as an air raid siren. Only a teen age
boy could love it. Dick Olson, a kind of 'boy inventor' in Omaha at that
time, made a free flight model with one. After the picture above was
taken, he managed to get the engine started. (The Model A spark coil is
in the box at the left). The aircraft slithered across the grass and rose
very slowly. It flew for perhaps 20 seconds. Th engine quit, nose dropped
and within a few more seconds it hit the telephone wires and fell to the
ground.
