THE TEAMS

Purgai/Katona

This team was the defacto MOKI "works" team for many years. MOKI is an acronym derived from Modell KIsérleti Állomás (Model Experimental Station). This may come as a surprise to you, having seen it advertised in the US press as "Moki".

Having seen more than one specious and totally wrong derivation for the name (e.g. in Model Airplane News) and many others. I know the standard of research is well south of low in these publications. Forget them and remember this one. (It could be a question on Jeopardy.)

Living in Budapest and having the MOKI works near the suburban sports aerodrome at Budaors gave them a good place to practice and frequent contact with Gyula Kirizma, the engine designer at MOKI.

The first MOKI's were similar to the Oliver in layout. I got a clapped-out MOKI TR-6 practice engine and used an Oliver cyilinder and liner in the MOKI case, making it an "Oakie". It was better than the Oliver case with the same liner.
