Keith Storey Takes The Checkered Flag

by Pete Soule

The guy that invented team racing. Invented it? He made it. Made it the world-wide popular event that it is.

President of the AMA, he shows his racing number "6" here. His AMA number was 9. He didn't buy it.

He was active all his life in both free flight and control line as well as a leader in the AMA. His last TR event was at the Vintage Stunt Contest (VSC) in Tucson, Arizona in 1998.

His McCoy deisel powered free flight, called "DurAnita" flown from the parking lot of the Santa Anita Race track was published in M.A.N. I thought the name came from a combination of SantaAnita and the McCoy trademark "DuroGlow".

By some quirk of fate the airline tickest he and his wife, Anita, bought for the flight from L.A. to Tucson for the VSC meet put Keith, Anita, and I in adjacent seats. DurAnita was for her. Why didn't the flight last longer? Why didn't I talk more to them?

Keith Storey Died in August 1999.
