Model 119

The history of the McDonnell model 119/220 is unusual. A good account of the events in the live of this aircraft up top the early 80's is found at   Model 119/220 History

There are a few comments about the article. The first is that the impression one gets from reading it that tunnel tests were made to determine the configuration is not correct. The basic layout was determined before testing and never changed significantly. The tests were primarily to measure low speed performance and locate any local aerodynamic problems like flow separation.

A second note is that the author of the article may not have known that when McDonnell wrote the project off as a loss and subsequently used it as an 'executive jet transport' was not what the IRS thought was a "loss". One reason for selling it for one dollar was to prevent having to take the price of a small jet airliner off the loss and declare it as income. In addition, at the time there were export laws barring the sale of this kind of aircraft to Cuba or to countries that may turn around and export the aircraft to Cuba. I understand that the grounds were that the aircraft could be made into a 'bomber'. However absurd, it closed an avenue for the immediate sale of the prototype.

The two photographs here are from the flight test phase of the program. The engines, 'donated' by GE were not the intended PW engines (see the history above). They make the aircraft look like a puppy with big feet.. The engines were similar to those fitted to the F2H Banshee.
