FH  Phantom

The McDonnell Phantom was the First Navy jet fighter. The more famous F4H was the Pahtom II, Initially the designation for McDonnell by the Navy was "D", later changed to the familiar "H". This accounts for the disparity in nomenclature.

The prototype Phantom, the XFD-1 is shown in the next two photos taken on 18th November, 1946.


An example of the production Phantom, the FH-1, is shown below as it flew in the Saint Loius area on February 17th 1948. About 60 were built; they served until 1950.
