The photos here are of the "second" Demon, the F3H-2. A complete redesign from the F2H-1 started with getting rid of the Westinghouse J40 engine, an engine that was not developed during the early design phae of the F3H-1 and proved to be a dissapointment or disasted to several airplanes. The powerful Allison J71 took its place. Larger and heavier than the dash one, the wings were enlarged by a 5% increase in chord. This increase caused some probelms early on as they increased area incrased the torsional stress on the wings. The wing fold area was a bolted assembly and, after a lengthy period of test and detective work, the problem was isolated to slip-stick friction in the joints causing small angular misalignments after aileron rolls. This was corrected and the new airframe was reliable with good control even during dives at supersonic speeds.
The F3H served a short period with the USN. 519 built. Engine: 4400kg Allison J71-A-2E Wing Span: 10.77m Length: 17.96m Height: 4.44m Wing Area: 48.22m2 Empty Weight: 10039kg Max.Weight: 15377kg Max. Speed: 1040km/h Ceiling: 13000m Max. Range: 2200km Armament: 4*g20mm
A view of the Demon with Sparrow missiles. The increased wing chord as compared with the dash one is clearly visible.
