F101  Voodo

The McDonnell F-101 Voodoo was initiated as an escort fighter for SAC. Short combat radius defeated that option, however the size of the airplane later gave it a long life as a nuclear air-to-air missile platform for air defense. Shown here at Edwards are the number one and two prototypes on thier initial test.

The number 4 prototype in refulling tests with the front of the aircraft painted with chalk dust to spot any JP leaks.

Finally, for size comparison, a cold war protrait pre ballistic missile age. Although it once equipped the majority of USAF interceptor units, it never was a major type in the US inventory, because of some control problems which limited its effectiveness. The F-101 was also flown for a long time by Canada. The reconaissance version was much used in Vietnam. 807 built.
