The program
was designed to get a quick overview of the ecological state of Ukrainian
rivers. It focuses on aspects of water quality
and pollution. Biological in-situ investigation are not yet regularly
performed in Ukraine. Habitat surveys and riparian environments are also
not yet monitored. So far, only chemical controls and a few biological
investigations are carried out by various state laboratories.
For the future, the hydrochemical investigation program should be oriented
at the Water Framework Directive, including the list of priority
substances. Hydrobiological and hydromorphological investigations should
complete the program. The scheme below shows the future needs. Examples of biological, chemical and
hydromorphological investigations are presented here as well. This work
was already done in a bigger area in and around Kiev ("Kiev Oblast") since
1997. Additionally, the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), ammonia (NH4-N),
and a few other parameters have been analysed. Acute and chronic
toxicity (test organism
Ceriodaphnia) and the sum of
chlororganic compounds (AOX) have
been determined, especially in case of obvious pollution.
