James came to Owen Sound as a boy of 15 years and first worked for the late Benjamin Allen who conducted a grocery business on Union Street. Then he went into the grocery business himself. A few years later when the John Harrison
Brothers, Flour and Milling Business opened he was the bookkeeper and accountant for the company. He was made the treasurer of the company. He was on the Council in the city and an official board member of the West Side Methodist Church.
James married Mary Harrison. (Mary Harrison was born in 1843, died on 1929 Nov 7 in Owen Sound, Grey, Ontario, Canada and was buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Owen Sound, Grey, Ontario, Canada.)
