James Fillery was part owner of Fillery & Nightingale, a corn chandlers business in Crawley, Sussex. Their premises was very close to the Station Brewery, owened by George Ockenden.

After James' early death, his partner, Moses Nightingale flourished on his own and eventually bought a substantial house called Hazeldene opposite his business and the brewery. Hazeldene still stands today on Brighton Road, Crawley. Nightingale was known as a local philanthropist and among other things ran his own amateur orchestra.
