Dave Scadden provided the following report on the game in the December 9th edition of the Windsor Star.
It's an experience the Sandwich Sabres could've done without.
Having won the OFSAA West Bowl in their three previous appearances (2001, 2002, 2003), the Sabres had seen the forlorn looks on their opponents' faces.
After absorbing a 45-6 beating from London Catholic Central Thursday at Toronto's Rogers Centre, they no longer have to wonder what it feels like to fall at the season's last hurdle.
"I'm shocked," said running back Andrew Kirby, who scored the Sabres' lone touchdown. "We were confident coming into this game. I played in the 2002 game we won and now I know what it's like to lose. It sucks losing."
After the game, the Sabres were still trying to process what they had witnessed on the grandest stage in high school football.
Sabres coach Dave Scadden admitted it was going to take a little while to scrub the bitter taste of this defeat away.
"I'm shocked because I didn't see this coming," Scadden said. "We seemed loose when we should've been and focused when we should've. I thought we were well prepared.
"Give them credit because they played 48 minutes of solid football. They were excellent and we weren't."
London pounced on two mistakes in the first quarter to build a 15- 0 lead.
Sandwich stopped the bleeding momentarily and they still felt comfortably in the contest.
"They scored really fast, but we've been behind before and always came back," Kirby said. "We never gave up."
London added three more touchdowns in the second quarter to make it 36-0 at the half. Sandwich's pride was all that was on the line after the break.
The Sabres gave a better account of themselves in the second half, but time was Catholic Central's ally.
"They never gave us the opportunity to create any momentum," Scadden said. "Our kids scrapped and clawed to the end, but London's a disciplined, well-coached team."
The Sabres were rewarded for their perseverance with Kirby's TD as time expired.
