"Information Technology Industry reports serious shortages of workers"

The world of networking is a highly competitive area that continues to grow in complexity as technology evolves. The demand for highly trained networking experts increases daily. Cisco Career Certification was designed to address this demand for more trained computer networking experts. The Cisco Networking Academy Programme specifically focuses on Routing and Switching, as well as WAN Switching solutions across the disciplines of network design and network support thus providing flexible options for developing your career.

Networking Academy Programme Features at Marc Garneau Collegiate

- Design, install and maintain small networks.
- Receive computer-based multi-media instruction over the Internet.
- Work hands-on with routers and switches in lab settings.
- Learn local and wide area network protocols.
- Learn network security using routers and switches.
- Acquire Co-op experience with potential summer employment.
- Prepare for the Cisco Systems certification examination.

The Networking Academy programme will prepare you for immediate positions in the global information economy. Students may upon completion of the four credits, write the Cisco exam and achieve an internationally recognized "Cisco Certified Network Associate Certificate" (C.C.N.A.). This is the first step leading to other Cisco certifications.

Start a growth path that will enable continual enhancement of skills in the networking industry or build a solid foundation for post secondary education in computer technologies.

At MGCI the Cisco program involves two classroom credit courses followed by two optional Co-op credits. The four courses are:

TDJ 3AR Technological Design (Computer Networking)
TDJ 4AR Technological Design (Computer Networking)
TDJ 4AE Computer Networking Co-op

If you are interested in applying to enter the Cisco Networking Academy programme please indicate this in your Annual Education Plan (Course Selection Sheet) next spring.

TDJ 3AR Technological Design (Computer Networking)
The Cisco Academy Technological Design programme (a 4-credit package) teaches students to design, build and maintain computer networks. The first half of this course features computer based learning to cover the theory of networking and the concepts behind local and wide area networks. The second half consists almost entirely of hands-on lab work with routers.
- Prerequisite: Grade 10 Advanced English and Grade 10 Advanced Math

TDJ 4AR Technological Design (Computer Networking)
The second course of the Cisco Networking Academy programme introduces you to the programming of switches and to more advanced knowledge of the theory involved in Wide Area Networks. Throughout the course is threaded a case study which involves wiring an entire school district in Arizona. This is both a way of reviewing the content of the whole course and of simulating the real work of network designers and administrators.
- Prerequisite: TDJ 3AR (Level 1 Cisco Academy Course)

TDJ 4AE Computer Networking Co-op
The Cisco Academy Technological Design Co-op experience (2 credits) takes you into the business world to work with professionals on local and wide area networks. Ideally, this will involve hands-on work with wiring and network hardware, as well as the more paper-based work required to plan and maintain networks.
- Prerequisite: TDJ 4AR (Level 2 Cisco Academy Course)
