A Tale of Two Winkers

In Japan and elsewhere in the world, CV80s were equipped with integrated front and rear turn signals. They looked sleek, and stylish. But for the North American market the CV80s were equipped with "winkers" (as they are often called) that stuck out like small flagpoles from the legshield and carrier rack respectively.

Red RivaWhile the latter arrangement was accomplished easily to meet the requirements of US and Canadian transportation authorities, Yamaha never really solved how to deal with the front signals. They looked great in the brochures, but that was probably the last time they fared so well.

Twenty years or so later, the front signals on most extant North American CV80s simply cannot be fitted properly. The model to the right might be an exception.

Original Japanese-style integrated signals for the CV80 can be purchased but they are hard to find and they are expensive. Nevertheless I plan to order a set while restoring my 1982 Beluga. I will also update this article as the work progresses.
