Genealogy Research --> How to access other researchers' resources - CD Look Ups

******************************

Access 'Other' Researchers

There are many people who volunteer to help others find information with the resources they have at hand. The following points are suggestions that you might find helpful to establish a guideline to follow in order to locate CD data from these volunteers more efficiently.

----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- -----

Keeping Your Research Valid

Before you even start looking for help in searching CDs or databases please read the following article. I can guarantee that you will save yourself a lot of grief later on. ~~
  • Genealogy Research: ~ From Dear Myrtle ~ "Citing CD Sources {and other sources} Properly."

Background Information before you ask for a look up -- Get The Specifics On The Person

  • You might try going to, "County Resources" and look up State/County sites where people have copied census data to share with other researchers.

  • Join a county mailing list where someone who actually lives in the county makes themselves available to find things in the county archives for you.

  • Get an idea of where the person you are looking for is indexed so that you can check at the LDS Family History Center for further information. First search your name(s) at the Family Tree Maker site to get a list of CD's where the name(s) appears.

Rhonda Houston's Genealogy Research Hot Tip for March 4th, 2000
Genealogy Research --> How to access obituaries as a resource for research.

    ******************************

"How To Access Obituaries" by; Barb Thomas

These options have worked for me in the past. Try them out.

i} The obituary daily times indexes current obits. Go to their website and do a search: http://obits.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/obit.cgi Most major newspapers have people listing the obits at this site. It will tell you the name of the newspaper if you follow the link to find out. Then go to step 2

ii} If it is a current obit, find a newspaper from the area and see if they have their current obits on-line. Many do. There is a list of newspapers at this URL with links to the papers if they have a webpage: http://www.ecola.com/news/press/na/us/

iii} If the obits are not on-line then write to the local library (which you can find on one of the on-line directory services). List the date of death or better yet, list the obit date and newspaper. Offer to cover copy cost and send a S.A.S.E. They usually will do it with precise information and charge you a dollar or two. Many will do old obits also or have a researcher/volunteer who works there do them for you.

iv} If you are looking for old obituaries, then go to your local library and request a newspaper from your particular area for a particular date range. Their inter library loan department will be able to search for a source of the newspaper and it will be loaded to you through your library, usually for a short time, in-library use only. Be sure to ask that it be sent to a library local to you that has a microfilm reader/copier that you can use. There may be a small fee. ****If you are researching in KS or MN, they have great historical societies that have newspapers microfilmed and list them on-line.

    Good Luck
