Family History: | This surname, which is believed to have originated in Devon, England, has been associated with the Bay Bulls and Bauline East area of Ferryland District since the eighteenth century. The Caplin Bay Gatheralls appear to have come from that same family and were well established by 1840. In the early 1860s, part of the family moved from Caplin Bay to Renews. William Gatherall married twice at Renews and raised a family there. His first child was born in 1863 and his last child was born in 1877. The notation of Joseph moving to Renews, probably made in the early 1860s, could be an indication that he went to live with his son?? William. Renews parish records seem to indicate that the family did not stay in that area even though William had 3 sons and 3 daughters. The Gatherall surname at Calvert disappeared with the death of Joseph (son of Thomas?), who never married. Joseph was still alive in 1935 but I could find no record of his death. Although the surname has disappeared, there are several families at Calvert with roots that connect to this family. |
