Family History: It is a general belief in the Condon family that Patrick Condon of Co. Kilkenny, a schoolteacher, settled at Caplin Bay in the 1820s and lived there until his death, supposedly in 1848. However, there are no entries for a Patrick Condon in the Voter's List of 1840, 1842, 1844, 1845, 1846 or 1847 anywhere in Ferryland District. This could indicate that the date recorded in the transcription of the old headstone may be incorrect, it possibly reads 1840 instead of 1848. Other people have also claimed that the transcription names Patrick's wife as Catherine. This name agrees with the Surrogate Court Record of Sept. 28 1829 - Catherine Congdon (sic).
Patrick and Catherine had three sons - Thomas, Kyran and Patrick. Kyran and Patrick were lost at sea. Thomas Condon, who married Anne Swain, daughter of Robert Swain, one of the early Stone Island settlers, was the only Condon to raise a family at Caplin Bay. Kyran Condon's family settled in St. John's and it is not known if Patrick had any children. To add to the mystery, Ernest Condon stated in the Newfoundland Census of 1935 that his father (Thomas) was born in Ireland. However, this is contrary to Condon family lore that claims that Thomas Condon was the first male child born on the north side of Caplin Bay.
Present Status: The Condon surname still exists at Calvert, however, many Condons, from each generation, have moved to other parts of Newfoundland and Canada, U.S.A. and world wide.
Local Place Names: Condon's Gulch
