On January 30, 1922, the settlement of Caplin Bay, Newfoundland was re-named Calvert, Newfoundland in honor of Sir George Calvert, the first Lord Baltimore, leader of a failed attempt to start a permanent settlement in this area of Newfoundland in the 1620s. Much later than Lord Baltimore had hoped, permanent settlement eventually took place, primarily in the last two decades of the 1700s and the first three decades of the 1800s. This site is dedicated to providing information about the origins of the families who eventually settled on the hillsides above the cliffs, coves and beaches, of what was then Caplin Bay, Newfoundland. Although some of the Irish and English arrived as established families, most families were formed from the marriages of young unmarried men and women, both immigrant and "bush-born", who had been hired to work in the fishing industry. By the 1840s, resident families were well established at Caplin Bay. Primarily as fishermen-farmer families, they wrested a living from both the land and sea. In addition, they become hunters, trappers, woodsmen and boat builders, continuously adapting and improvising to survive in a sometimes unforgiving and inhospitable climate.

In the pages that follow, I have tried to use the name Caplin Bay in reference to events that occurred prior to January 30, 1922. Likewise, when referring to events after that date, I have tried to use the new name of the settlement - Calvert.
