Fitzroy enters Kingston Tourney

From the WC Review

The Fitzroy Men's Fastball competitive team entered a fastball tournament in Kingston on the May long weekend.  The team entered this event as a tune up for the Ontario Men's Intermediate "C" 2003 Provincial tournament, to be hosted in Fitzroy Harbour on Aug 15-17.

The Kingston tournament featured several Intermediate "A" teams which were bound to give a stiff challenge to the local squad.

The first game pitted Fitzroy Harbour against the Central Frontenac Cyclones, slotted as the #9 Intermediate team in Ontario in preseason rankings.  Fitzroy fell well short with a 7-1 defeat in the first game of the year.  They made of couple costly errors, resulting in 3 runs against and found it difficult to get on to the pitching of Cyclones with only two hits during the entire game.  Bud Hanlan took the pitching loss for the Harbour.  Chris Parish scored the only run for the local side.

The second game of the day matched Fitzroy Harbour against the Peterborough Ricart Pros, a team ranked as #5 in Ontario.  Final score was 4-0 in favour of the Pros.  Fitzroy played extremely strong game defensively, but spread out four hits over the seven innings and couldn't score a run.  Jon Daley stroked a lead-off triple in the sixth, but his team-mates couldn't find a way to bring him in and break the shutout.  Catcher Steve "Beef" Johnson also had two hits in the losing cause.  Dave Nicholson pitched well for the Harbour using off speed to fool the big bats of Peterborough.

The Harbour took an 0-2 record into their final game of the day against Belleville Darren Green Sandblasting.  Belleville boasted as their top player #24 Greg Garrity, a former member of the Canadian Junior National team.  With both Hanlan and Nicholson out with hand injuries for this game, right fielder Jason Armstrong and second baseman Charlie Ross were pressed into service to pitch and performed well given the circumstances.  Armstrong and Ross were able to avoid any home runs by the opponents, but Belleville end up with the 8-3 victory, chipping away with single and doubles.  Again the Harbour played very well in the field and avoided making errors.  First baseman Neil Murphy had two hits and scored a run for Fitzroy.

The team is also pleased to announce the title sponsorship of West Carleton Electric who will be providing new uniforms for the team.

West Carleton Electric, based in Fitzroy Harbour, will an affiliate member of the Upper Ottawa Valley Men's Fastball League for the 2003 season and will play games against Pembroke, Beachburg, Micksburg, Campbell's Bay and Shawville throughout the summer.  Next scheduled action for the squad is at home against the Campbell's Bay Royals on Sunday June 8th at 8:30 at the Fitzroy Harbour Community Centre.
