Fitzroy Fastball Team Wins First Home Game

Fitzroy Harbour West Carleton Electric fastball team defeated the Campbell’s Bay Royals 6-1 in their first home game of the season on Sunday.

After two scoreless innings, the WC Electric took control of the game in the third.  Centre fielder Jon Daley started the rally with a one-out single.  A bunt single by right fielder Trevor Barton put runners on first and second.  Second baseman Charlie Ross then hit an RBI single to score the first run of the game.  Later in the inning, with two out, shortstop Michael Cavanagh hit a three-run home run to right-centre field to give the Harbour a 4-0 lead after three innings.

The fifth inning saw Jon Daley and Trevor Barton both get on base again.  With runners on first and third, third baseman Shawn Rebertz surprised the visiting team with a squeeze bunt driving in Daley, to put the home team up 5-0.

Catcher Joe McCleary of Campbell’s Bay scored the visiting team’s only run of the game in the top of the sixth with a solo home run.  In the bottom of the inning, Fitzroy responded.  Pinch hitter Barry Storie, who drew a walk, was moved over on a bunt single by first baseman James Caldwell and then brought in on a Jon Daley hit that was misplayed by a Royal’s defender.

Fitzroy Harbour played strong defensively, making only one error, and Bud Hanlon pitched very well for the home team.  Brad Porter, an occasional pitcher for the Harbour in tournaments, took the loss for Campbell’s Bay.

WC Electric is playing an exhibition series with the teams in the Upper Ottawa Valley Men’s Fastball League to prepare for their hosting of the 2003 Ontario Amateur Softball Association Men’s Intermediate C Provincial Tournament on August 15-17.  The final list of teams entering the provincials will be released in late June, but there are indications of teams entering from Jarvis, Aylmer (Ontario), Micksburg, Kemptville, Ottawa, Blackburn Hamlet, Kingston and possibly Carp, Kanata and Stittsville.

The team is also pleased to announce several new sponsors have joined West Carleton Electric in supporting the team, including Vance’s Garage (Carp), Delmer Cavanagh Farm (Antrim), Ontario Power Generation, and Penny’s Fudge Factory (Fitzroy Harbour).

Next action for the team is June 17th when they will travel to Shawville.
