From the West Carleton Review newspaper, July 25/2003

The Fitzroy Harbour West Carleton Electric Men's Fastball team faced the Kemptville Thunder team in a home game on Sunday July 20.  The Kemptville Thunder, a tournament team who have been invited to the 2003 International Softball Congress “Tier II” World Tournament in Wisconsin, have some of the best pitching in Eastern Ontario.  The Electric’s pitchers were also in top-notch form – as witnessed by the 1-0 end result in favour of the Thunder.

The WC Electric ended the game without a single hit, and managed only one base runner in the game.  In the third inning, second baseman Trevor Barton reached on a walk, was moved to second on a Jason Armstrong sacrifice bunt and took third on a wild pitch.  However, he was stranded there, as the next two batters struck out to end the inning.  The home squad, throughout seven innings of play, mounted no other offense.  The Thunder gave work to three different pitchers in the game - Brad Porter, Mark Wright, and Dan Konkle – who combined for sixteen strikeouts.

Kemptville also had limited offense, with only five hits in the game.  The Thunder’s only run came in the top of the seventh when a one-out ground ball with men on first and second presented an opportunity for a double play.  The first out of the double was made, but the throw to first to complete the turn was off the mark, allowing a run to score.  This held up as the game’s only run and sealed the victory for the visitors.  The WC Electric pitchers also had their share of strikeouts as Bud Hanlon and Barry Storie combined for thirteen “K’s”.

The Harbour will travel to Kemptville on the afternoon of Sunday July 27 to play the Thunder in a return match up as they continue preparations for the 2003 Ontario Amateur Softball Association Men’s C Provincial tournament to be held in Fitzroy Harbour on August 15-17.  Eleven teams will be vying for the provincial title.  Action in the tournament starts at the Harbour diamond on Friday August 15th at 5:00pm, with opening ceremonies before the WC Electric’s first game at 9:00pm.  Ball will be played all day Saturday, starting at 9:00am.  Sunday games will also start at 9:00am, with the final slated for 1:00pm.  Kinburn will also host some games Friday and Saturday night.

Admission prices for the games will be a reasonable $2 for Friday and $3 per day for Saturday and Sunday.  Weekend passes will also be on sale for $5 at the Harbour Store in advance or at the gate.  For more information, contact Adam Brown at 623-8867, or check out the team’s website at http://ca.geocities.com/fitzroyfastball/UOVMFL.htm.
