The Fitzroy Harbour West Carleton
Electric Men's Fastball team and the Micksburg Twins, widely regarded as the
top fastball team in Eastern Ontario, faced off in an exhibition game on Sunday
July 6 in Fitzroy.
Micksburg ace thrower Corey Costello
provided both offence and defence as the Twins outlasted the WC Electric to win
3-2. Costello, one of the province's
best pitchers, held the Electric to three hits using his speed and incredible
drop ball to fool hitters. WC Electric
pitcher Bud Hanlon also threw well, limiting the big Micksburg bats to five
hits.
Micksburg jumped out to a 3-0 lead
after the top of the fifth, including a Costello home run, until the Harbour
responded. After a lead off single by
second baseman Charles Ross, first baseman Chris Douglas brought the crowd to
its feet with a two run homer over the left field fence to make the score
3-2. However, that was as close the WC
Electric would get, as the team failed to generate any more offence and
Costello shut the door to seal the Twins' victory.
The only other hit of the game for
the Harbour was a bloop double by third baseman Neil Murphy in the fourth
inning.
Next action for the WC Electric is
at the Campbell's Bay Bash tournament on July 11-13 where the team will be
looking to avenge an earlier season loss against Shawville in their first game.
This eight-team tournament has five of
the best squads from across eastern Ontario and western Quebec, as well as
three teams from southern Ontario attending.
This event should be a good tune up, as Fitzroy Harbour continues to prepare
for the Ontario Amateur Softball Association Men's C Provincial tournament to
be held in the Harbour from August 15-17.
