WC Electric go 3-1 over Canada Day weekend
The Fitzroy Harbour West Carleton
Electric men's fastball team won three games and lost one match over the Canada
Day long weekend.
The first game was held June 27th, at
the Kinburn diamond, with the WC Electric defeating the visiting squad from
Blackburn Hamlet from a score of 11-1. Pitcher Bud Hanlon had the win for the
Harbour, as he threw a four-hitter with the only run given up on a Steve Walden
home run for Blackburn. Charles Ross
and Shawn Rebertz had homeruns for the home team, and Trevor Barton also played
well offensively by going 4 for 4 and scoring two runs.
Next action for the WC Electric was
during the late evening of June 30th, up in Campbell's Bay, Quebec as part of
the Upper Ottawa Valley Men's Fastball League "Showcase Evening"
against Pembroke Pemco Steel. The WC
Electric came away on the right side of a 4-3 decision in a tight game that
went down to the wire. Fitzroy pitcher
Bud Hanlon started the first four innings and held the Pembroke squad
scoreless. Barry Storie pitched the
final three innings for the WC Electric, allowing three runs and getting the
official 'win'. Third baseman Shawn
Rebertz provided two runs for the local team with a homerun in the third, while
a clutch sixth inning game winning RBI single was providing by left fielder
Jason Armstrong. Pembroke threatened in
the top of the seventh by scoring two runs, but Storie shut the door with some
timely strikeouts to seal the one run victory.
After a long night celebrating the
victory against Pembroke, the WC Electric played the first game of the morning
in the Canada Day tournament in Pembroke.
The West Carleton team was clearly ill-prepared for their game against
the Micksburg Twins (ranked #6 Intermediate team in Ontario) and lost a 7-0
five-inning mercy rule game. Tournament
pickup pitcher Brad "Ned" Porter was not given much support, as the
team made several defensive errors through out the game. Micksburg ace pitcher
Corey Costello threw a one-hitter with only Michael Cavanagh reaching base for
the Harbour.
The WC Electric regrouped in their
second tournament game to beat the same Pembroke team they had defeated the
night before, by a score of 8-4. Bud
Hanlon got the pitching victory as the team played much better defensively and
got their bats working well against Pembroke lefty Len Berger. Michael Cavanagh, Charles Ross and Shawn
Rebertz all had key RBI hits for the team to help secure the victory. Sharp
bunting and base-running skills by Jon Daley, Don Rorwick and Neil Murphy also
contributed in a game where the WC Electric executed with sound ball
fundamentals.
As the local team was preparing for
their third game, versus the Eganville Midgets, the weather took a turn for the
worst. As the rain poured down, the
field became a quagmire and the tournament had to be halted.
The West Carleton Electric club has
learned that twelve teams will be taking part in the Ontario Amateur Softball
Association Men's "C" Provincial fastball tournament to be hosted
August 15-17 in Fitzroy Harbour and Kinburn.
A tournament schedule will be released soon and passes will be on
sale. Teams will be attending from most
corners of the province, with Fitzroy Harbour, Ottawa, Kemptville (two teams),
Blackburn and Micksburg coming from eastern Ontario, Sudbury from northern
Ontario, Enterprise from the Kingston area, Bobcaygeon and Wroxeter from

they have received sponsorship from Reid Brothers Motor Sales.
