Game report courtesy of Shawn Williams:

Neil Cooke was sick twice on Wednesday.  He was sick in bed in the morning and then came out and gave a sick performance on the mound for the Carp I4C Victory in Greater Ottawa Fastball League action in Manotick last night against the Ottawa Blitz.  Battling a flu bug, the stocky red headed right-hander led Carp to an 8-3 win over Ottawa on the strength of a four hit, 15 strikeout performance.  Cooke struck out the side in the first and fifth innings, including all three batters he faced in the fifth.  At one point during a stretch from the fourth to the seventh inning, Cooke struck out eight of nine batters for I4C Victory.  On the night, Cooke gave up one earned run on four hits, with 15 strikeouts, two walks and a pair of wild pitches.

At the plate, newcomer Kyle Gourgon led the way for Carp going 4-4 with two singles, two triples, an RBI, a stolen base and two runs scored.  The hockey scholarship athlete attending Mercyhearst University in Erie, PA. showed that he is as equally adept with a softball bat as he is with a hockey stick.  Kevin McGuire went 2-2 with two singles, a walk, a sacrifice, an RBI, two stolen bases and two runs scored.  Another solid night of offence from the sure handed shortstop.

For Ottawa, Derick Bulley was 2-3 with a single, a double an RBI and two runs scored.  Bulley also took the loss for Ottawa in relief of Jim Blakely.  In four innings pitched, Bulley gave up six runs on nine hits and walked three.  In Blakely’s three innings of work, he gave up two runs on five hits and walked one.

After the game, Carp I4C Victory Head Coach and General Manager Shawn Williams had this to say.  “The bats were working tonight.  Everyone made a contribution in some small way whether it was a walk or a sacrifice or a single.  That’s how you win ball games.  We scored in six out of seven innings tonight and in the one inning we didn’t score we started with a lead-off triple and didn’t manage to score, something that doesn’t happen very often.”  Williams added, “It was important for us to win tonight.  This is a very good Intermediate “A” men’s league and all the teams are good.  We knew that our club and Ottawa have been struggling a little of late and whoever won this game would get a little boost of confidence.  We were short a couple of guys but still managed to pull off a win.  I’m proud of the way the guys played.”

Carp remains without Steve McLaughlin who has been lost for the season with a ruptured Achilles tendon and the team was dealt a further blow when Greg McMillan who plays for the Victory in league games, broke his leg in the ISC II Qualifier Tournament in a game in Stittsville this past weekend.  McMillan broke it while playing with the Stittsville 56ers, a team he regularly plays for in tournaments and is likely gone for the remainder of the year.

Carp’s next home game is this Monday, June 26th at 8:30PM at the Carp Fairgrounds when the Victory take on Dan Bradley and the Stittsville 56ers.  Admission is free and fastball fans and families in Carp and the rest of West Carleton are invited to attend.
