Game Report courtesy of Shawn Williams:

Following last night’s Home Opener for the Carp I4C Victory, there was a large laser light show and a display of fireworks in the sky but unfortunately it was due to Mother Nature and not a win for the home team.

Carp fell 7-4 to Manotick Lomor Printers in its first home game of the year at the Fairgrounds in Carp and its record dropped to 1-3 on the year.  Despite taking the loss, Neil Cooke (1-1) pitched a strong game for the Victory.  Cooke gave up seven runs (five earned) on 10 hits while striking out 11 and walking none.  Carp made one error that lead to two Manotick runs in the third inning.

It was one inning that really cost the Victory in the contest.  A controversial call in the top of the fourth led to a series of hits that resulted in five runs for Manotick.  Mike Branchaud led off with a shallow fly to right field.  Trevor Wood charged hard and after the ball hit his glove it appeared to pop up in the air and then land in his bare hand however, the plate umpire ruled no catch.  After conferring with the base umpire the call stood.  When asked about the call, Wood said, “I made the catch.  The ball hit my glove and when it popped out, it hit my arm and then I was able to grab it with my hand.  It never did hit the ground.  But what can you do?  The call was made and we have to live with it.”

Tony Riches pitched for Manotick giving up four runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and no walks.  There was one Manotick error.

Offensively, Kevin McGuire went 1-4 with a home run and one RBI.  McGuire hit the ball hard in all four plate appearances.  Duane Bromley, playing 1st base for Carp last night was strong at the plate going 2-3 with 3 RBI’s including a two run triple in the fourth inning with two out that made the score 7-3.  However, he was left stranded when Dany Veil went down swinging.

Asked for his thoughts after the game, Carp Head Coach and General Manager had this to say.  “Sometimes it’s one inning that will kill you.  But we have to learn to not let things affect us that we can’t control.  I thought Trevor made the catch (in the top of the fourth) but the umpire didn’t see it that way so you move on.  The call has been made.  At that point I thought we lost a little bit of focus and that seemed to help Manotick with its outburst.  You just can’t do that at this level of ball.  We continue to hit the ball well at this level.  We only had four strikeouts on the night meaning that everyone is getting a piece of the ball.  We were also missing a couple of regulars out of the line-up including Shawn Houle who had a work related injury and wasn’t able to go tonight.”  Williams said that Houle should be ready to go in Manotick this weekend for the Dickinson Days Tournament.

Carp I4C Victory will open its tournament schedule this weekend when it travels to Manotick to play in the Dickinson Days Tournament hosted by league opponent Manotick Lomor Printers.  The Victory will open against Blackburn on Friday, June 2nd at 8:00 PM on Diamond #2 in Manotick.  A win and Carp will play Kanata Team Easton at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 3rd also on Diamond #2.  A loss on Friday and Carp plays at 1:00 PM on Saturday.  There will be food concessions and a beer garden at the tournament and a home run hitting contest is scheduled for 1:45 PM on Saturday.  The tournament helps Manotick raise funds to operate its team and fans from both Carp and Manotick are encouraged to attend.  All six Greater Ottawa Fastball League teams are entered in the 10-team double elimination format tournament guaranteeing plenty of local talent appearing throughout the weekend.  The weatherman has promised to cooperate with temperatures in the low 20’s throughout the weekend.
