Game Report from Shawn Williams:

Carp I4C Victory was short on players, short on hits and as a result on the short end of a 6-0 loss in a shortened five inning game (under the league mercy rule of a six run lead after five innings or five run lead after six innings) to Kanata Team Easton in Greater Ottawa Fastball League action at Alexander Grove Park in Stittsville (Kanata plays its home games out of Stittsville’s Alexander Grove Park) on Wednesday (May, 24th) night.

The Victory were missing three regulars out of its line-up including Pete Petit who had gone 5-8 in the first two games of the season and scheduled starter Trevor Wood who was fighting the flu.  Carp Head Coach and General Manager, Shawn Williams turned the ball over to left-hander Duane Bromley for the start.

A key error in the bottom of the first with a runner on first led to four unearned runs for Team Easton.  Earl Kearns led off the bottom of the first for Kanata with a single and advanced to second on an error by Carp shortstop, Kevin McGuire.  Dave Tubman followed that with a single and with the bases loaded, former Canadian National team member, Randy Peck walked forcing in the first run of the game. Todd Fraser hit a ground ball to third baseman Brooks Paziuk who threw home for the force out erasing Kevin Chevrier.  Cory Morrison then hit into an odd fielder’s choice as the ball dropped in front of Carp right fielder Mike Money and Fraser got hung up between first and second while Money threw to second for the force out.  Tubman scored from third on the play.  Dan Konkle hit a single to score Peck and advance Morrison to third where he eventually scored on an Al Read single to make the score 4-0 after the first for the home team.

In the third inning, Easton added to the score with back-to-back solo home runs by Dan Konkle and Al Read to complete the scoring.

Dan Konkle (2-0) got the win for Kanata Team Easton throwing a perfect five inning game.  Konkle struck out nine of the 15 Carp batters he faced on the way to his “no-no”.  It is Konkle’s second no-hitter in a row and he has only allowed two runners to reach base via walks in 11 innings pitched.  Duane Bromley (0-2) took the loss for Carp giving up six runs (four unearned), nine hits and striking out four.

Williams said after the game, “Dan is one of the best pitchers in the game at this level.  Some of our guys aren’t used to facing that caliber of pitching.  The key is to not be intimidated and to play with confidence.  Once we play in a couple of tournaments like Dickinson Days in Manotick and the ISC II Qualifier it will give our guys the chance to face better pitching in a short time frame and that should make them better.”  When asked about the defense Williams said, “Even though we lost, it continues to get better.  We went from making five errors in the first game to three last week to one tonight.  Unfortunately the one error proved costly but that’s the way things go sometimes.  I also threw Duane into a pitching situation at the last minute because Trevor became ill today and he had to face a really good hitting team.  I didn’t give him much time to prepare mentally.”

Carp’s Home Opener is Monday night, May 29th when I4C Victory takes on Manotick Lomor Printers featuring local Carp product, Donny Cox.  Game time is 8:30 PM at the Carp Fairgrounds and admission is free.  Families with young children playing t-ball or fastball in Carp and the surrounding areas are encouraged to attend and Carp players are always available to speak with the kids and provide autographs.

Carp I4C Victory’s first tournament of the year will be June 2-4, 2006 when the team competes in the Dickinson Days tournament being held in Manotick and hosted by fellow league team, Manotick Lomor Printers.  The Victory will then play in the ISC II Qualifier being held in Fitzroy Harbour with additional games in Stittsville from June 16-18, 2006.  Fourteen of the best Intermediate teams in Eastern Ontario and Quebec will participate for the right to represent Eastern Canada at the ISC II Tournament of Champions to be held in Kitchener, Ontario, August 13-18, 2006.
