Harbour in Bay Bash
The Fitzroy Harbour West Carleton
Electric men's fastball team participated in the 3rd Annual Bay Bash tournament
in Campbell's Bay, Quebec on July 11 and 12.
The Harbour, the 2001 Champions at
Bay Bash, drew Shawville in their first game and lost 6-2. Hoping to avenge an earlier season loss to
the Pontiacs, Fitzroy started lefty Barry Storie against Shawville's hard throwing
right-hander Mark Wright.
Shawville struck early with a run in
each of the first three innings, while Fitzroy had only a solo home run by
third baseman Shawn Rebertz in response.
A three-run Shawville rally in the fifth, off of WC Electric relief
pitcher Brad Porter, put the game out of reach. Pinch hitter Chris Douglas singled and then scored the only other
Fitzroy run, when the opposition misplayed centre fielder Jon Daley's ground
ball in the sixth.
Losing their first game pitted the
WC Electric against the power Kemptville Team Easton (2002 Bay Bash Champions)
in their second game. Kemptville
bettered the local squad by a 11-5 final score. Fitzroy started early, with a two-run first inning. Shortstop Michael Cavanagh hit a solo home
run followed by a Rebertz triple, who was brought in by catcher Steve Johnson's
RBI single.
In the top of the third, Fitzroy had
the Kemptville team with two out, two runners on and no runs scored. Then a
costly defensive miscue in the outfield opened the flood gates - when the dust
settled, Team Easton had scored seven runs in the top of third of a dispirited
WC Electric squad. The Fitzroy team
managed to battle back somewhat, scoring another two runs on RBI doubles by
left fielder Jason Armstrong and first baseman Don Rorwick, before chasing
Kemptville starter Kyle Jamieson.
Former Nova Scotia Senior pitcher Dan Konkle came on in relief in the
fifth. The only runs scored by Fitzroy
off Konkle were provided when he walked two consecutive batters and second
baseman Trevor Barton hit a bloop single to cash in Fitzroy' fifth and final
run. Kemptville finished the game with
six home runs against Bud Hanlon, who took the pitching loss for the WC
Electric.
Kemptville Team Easton eventually
lost in the finals of the tournament to the Micksburg Twins by a score of 2-0.
Upcoming action for the WC Electric
includes two home games at the Fitzroy Harbour Community Centre. On Sunday July 20th at 7:00PM the home squad
faces off against the Kemptville Thunder, which includes several players from
the Team Easton tournament squad.
Wednesday July 23rd at 8:30PM will see the Upper Ottawa Valley Men's
Fastball League Beachburg team come to town in a game that will be "Beach
Ball Giveaway Night" at the Community Centre. The team will also travel to Blackburn Hamlet in a rematch
against their men's league all-stars on Friday July 25th at 8:00PM.
Fitzroy Harbour West Carleton
Electric is also pleased to announce that Clouthier Custom Carpentry has signed
on as another sponsor of the team.
