Que se passait-il donc, les 2, 3, et 4 Août, 1985 à Prud'homme, Sask., qu'on y voyait tant de
véhicules de toutes sortes, de toutes grandeurs, entrés dans ce petit village? Ce qui se passait? Mais, c'est bien simple: Une réunion des descendants des pionniers Bandet arrivés il y a 80 ans
ici-même! Pensez-y 400 personnes et même un peu plus - nombre dépassant la population actuelle du village de Prud'homme qui est de 222! C'était merveilleux de voir la joie sur tous les
visages - jeunes et vieux! Beaucoup ne s'était jamais vu, tous jouissaient de faire connaissance!
Ce homestead-ci: SW 1/4 28-38-28 W 2nd est le premier endroit ou les pionniers Joseph Auguste Bandet et ses cinq enfants venus de la France vinrent s'établir en Mai 1905. En 1938, Simplice Bandet et ses fils érigèrent cette croix pour demander au Seigneur de délivrer les récoltes des sauterelles. Depuis ce temps là, le Curé et les paroissiens font un pèlerinage à la croix selon les besoins. Donc, le vendredi soir, comme prévu sur le programme, tous arrivaient pour s'inscrire, installer leurs tableaux et visiter. Le 3 Août, samedi, ce fut de même jusqu'au souper, tous jouissaient de rencontrer des cousins et cousines qu'ils n'avaient jamais vus! Dans l'après midi il y eu des jeux de balle et tous s'en donnèrent à coeur joie! A la fin du banquet qui eu lieu à 5 p.m. il y eu des discours par des membres représentants chacunes des cinq branches (les 5 enfants de Joseph Auguste Bandet). Louis Bandet fut le maître de cérémonie. Ceux qui parlèrent furent: Tous souhaitèrent la bienvenue à tous et dirent leur bonheur de le faire et d'être présent à une se belle fête. Après le souper les enfants eurent des tours de promenade dans un 'buggy' du bon vieux temps, tiré par deux beaux petits chevaux et cela fut fait gratuitement par M. Mike Nowasulski, un ami des Bandet. Pendant ce temps les adultes dans l'arène eurent comme divertissement des chansons et de la musique fournies par des personnes de talent de la parenté et cela en attendant la soirée dansante qui eu lieu jusque tard dans la nuit. Tous s'amusèrent beaucoup. Le dimanche, 4 Août, tous se réunissaient pour un diner de famille à 11 a.m. puis à 3 heures p.m. la cloche de l'Église nous invitait à la messe. Elle fut vraiment belle1 Le célébrant était l'Abbé April, missionnaire du Brézil en vacances. La chorale était composée de volontaires des cinq branches des descendants Bandet. Novia Proulx touchait l'orgue. Ce fut magnifique et si priant. Avant le chant d'entrée, Louis Bandet souhaita la bienvenue à l'Abbé April puis donna à l'assemblée le message des cousins Bandet de France, arrivé juste deux jours auparavant. Chers cousins et cousines: La famille Bandet de France se trouvant réunie à Entre-e-Guiers, pense bien à vous et vous souhaite Bonne Fête. Signé: Joséphine Bandet veuve de Julien Bandet. Au plaisir de se voir un jour. Signé: Hippolyte Bandet. En espérant de se rencontrer avant la fin de nos jours. Signé: Marcel et Hortense Bandet. Mes amitiés à tous. Signé: Fernand et Isabelle Bandet. A noter que les cousins Julien, Hippolyte, Marcel et Fernand Bandet sont tous fils de Félix Bandet lequel était le plus jeune frère de Joseph Auguste Bandet. Julien est décédé en Novembre 1983.
A la messe, la première lecture fut faite en français par Mme Jeanne (Montès) Rocher,
le psaume en français par Mme Gisèle (Bandet) Dubé et la deuxième lecture en anglais par M.
Gerald O'Grady. Vers la fin de la célébration, Louis Bandet remercia l'Abbé April d'avoir bien voulu accepter de venir nous dire la messe, puis Mme Cécile (Bandet) Chabot fut invitée à nous donner son message: "Il me fait très grand plaisir d'être ici aujourd'hui parmi vous tous. Peut-être vous êtes vous denandé pourquoi notre ancêtre, Joseph Auguste Bandet a quitté son beau pays de France pour venir s'établir au Canada. Comme dans l'Histoire Sainte Dieu avait dit à Abraham: 'Laisse ton pays, tes parents, tes amis,' ainsi Dieu parla à notre ancêtre Joseph Auguste Bandet et lui dit: 'Quitte la France, tes parents, tes amis, et viens au Canada ou toi et tes enfants vous serez libres de pratiquer votre religion.' Et grand'père obéit à Dieu. Il fit le suprême sacrifice pour son Dieu et pour sa famille. Je voudrais aussi vous parler de mon père Henri Joseph Bandet. J'étais avec lui le dernier jour de sa vie. Il était très lucide mais très faible. Chaque fois qu'il se réveillait il appelait un de nous, ses onze enfants. Puis il se ré-endormait. Mon père n'avait jamais été un homme bien démonstratif, mais cette journée là, j'ai compris combien il nous aimait et combien il désirait que nous nous aimions et que nous nous entr'aidions les uns les autres. Le nom qu'il répétait le plus était celui de la plus jeune parceque maman était morte avant que Jeanne ait deux ans. Finalement j'ai compris ce que papa voulait et je lui dit: 'Oui papa, nous prendron soin d'elle, nous ferons tout pour elle.' J'ai fait cette promesse au nom de toutes mes soeurs et de tout mes frères. "C'est ce que je voulais vous dire à tous. Merci." A l'issue de la célébration la cloche de l'Église sonna à toute volée pendant près de cinq minutes. Puis plusieurs personnes se rendirent au cimetière visiter les tombes des pionniers et d'autres de leur parenté. Ensuite tous se réunirent à l'arène pour un dernier souper et chacun s'en retourna chez eux bien content de cette belle fin de semaine, en espérant recommencer dans cinq ans peut être? Dans l'arène au fond, de beaux grands portraits de Joseph Auguste Bandet et ses cinq enfants venus a Prud'homme en 1905 pouvaient être vu et ils étaient entourés de nombreux tableaux des différentes familles venues pour la célébration. De gros bouquets de fleurs décoraient la plateforme et les nombreuses tables rangées pour les repas de famille. Plusieurs video cameras se voyaient (5 ou 6) bien occupés à prendre toutes sortes d'activités, à part de tous les cameras ordinaires. Nous aurons certainement de beaux souvenirs pour l'avenir! C'est grâce aux idées, à l'aide et à la coopération de tous que cette belle fin de semaine a pu avoir lieu. To start the big weekend celebration, the organizing committee had a big surprise Friday
morning, Aug. 2nd. The news arrived that the bronze plaque which was not supposed to arrive before September, was at the Crdit Union. It is a very nice plaque and is now set up at the Bandet Cross on the corner of the first homestead where the Bandet Pioneers settled in 1905.
It measures 18 by 24 inches and reads as follows: It was on this land SW 1/4 28-38-28 W 2nd that Joseph Auguste Bandet began homesteading operations after his arrival from France in May 1905 with his five children. In 1938, toward the end of the great depression Simplice Bandet and his sons erected a cross on their land and prayed for deliverance from an infestation of grasshoppers. Since then the priest and parishioners gather to pray before the cross through devotion or for special needs.
Friday night, August 2nd, according to the program, from far and near, cousins, relatives
were arriving to register, to bring their "tableaux" (all nice, and so artistic) and visit.
All were so happy, no one seemed tired. All kinds of vehicles were coming in the village of Prud'homme and finding their way to the parking spaces and the trailers to the sports grounds.
Two of these trailers could attract attention, for one had a poster on the side written "We are Yellow" (descendants of Henri J. Bandet), and the other had on its rear window: "BEWARE
BANDET'S AHEAD". The M.C. was Louis Bandet, and him and all the above mentioned said how happy they were to be present and to welcome all their aunts, uncles, and cousins of the other branches. After supper, Mr. Mike Nowasulski gave tours to the children in a buggy driven by two beautiful small horses. He did this gratiously and freely as an old time friend of the Bandet's. During that time, adults were being entertained with songs and music while waiting for the dance. The next day, Sunday at 3 p.m. there was a Mass of Thanksgiving in the church, celebrated by Fr. April, a missionary from Brazil who was on holidays. The choir composed of volunteers from the 5 branches, had met to practice before the celebration with Novia Proulx as organist, and they really led the participants to pray and give glory to God for the past 80 years since the arrival of the Bandet pioneers in Prud'homme, Sask. Canada. After the entrance hymn, Louis Bandet welcomed Fr. April, then gave the congregation, the message from the Bandet cousins in France which had arrived two days before. This is a translation:
The following was on a card - also translated: Dear Cousins: The Bandet family of France being gathered together in Entre-2-Guiers, are thinking of you and are wishing you a Happy reunion. Signed: Joséphine Bandet widow of Julien Bandet. Hoping to see you someday. Signed: Hippolyte Bandet. Wishing to meet you before the end of our lives. Signed: Marcel and Hortense Bandet. Greetings to all. Signed: Fernand and Isabelle Bandet. Please note that Julien, Hippolyte, Marcel and Fernand Bandet are all sons of Félix Bandet the youngest brother of Joseph Auguste Bandet. Julien Bandet passed away in November 1983. The intentions at the offertory were made by two representatives of each of the five branches. Aline Hounjet said it in French then Robert Beauregard repeated in English: "Thank you Lord for this happy weekend reunion where everyone cooperated so willingly to make it a great success. Let us pray to the Lord." Monique Lévèsque in French then Robert Twa(Jr) in English: "Thank you Lord for our tenacious and valiant pioneers who have given us life and Faith, and help us to follow in their footsteps. Let us pray...". Bernadette Langlois in French then Glenn Dinning in English: "Lord Jesus, Son of God, send forth your Spirit and renew us. Let us pray...". Laura Bertoncini in French then Sylvia Bertoncini in English: "Thank you Lord that our Grand Mother Clémentine is here with us for this celebration. Let us pray to the Lord." Yves Marchildon in French then Marc Bandet in English: "Thank you Lord for all the youths here present. Strengthen and renew their faith, that they may be worthy disciples of your Son Jesus. Let us pray...". The Offertory procession was as follows: At the closing of the Mass, Louis Bandet thanked the celebrant for accepting to say this Thanksgiving Mass for us. Then Mrs Cécile (Bandet) Chabot said a few very appropriate words that ended our weekend reunion very well. This is what she said: "Dear relatives: Perhaps you've asked yourselves why our ancestor Joseph Auguste Bandet left his beautiful country of France to come and live in Canada. Holy scripture tells us how God spoke to Abraham and told him: 'Leave your country, your parents, your friends'. In the same way God spoke to our Ancestor Joseph Auguste Bandet and said: 'Leave your country, your parents, your friends. Come with your children to Canada where you will have the freedom to practice your religion'. So Grandfather obeyed God. He made the supreme sacrifice for his God and for his family. I would like to share with you also about my father, Henri Joseph Bandet. I was alone with him on his last day on earth, and I learnt a great deal that day. My father was fully conscious but extremely weak. Each time he'd wake up all he could do was call one or two of us his children by name, then he'd go back to sleep, then he'd wake up and call another one or two. Now, my father never was a very demonstrative person but that last day I want to tell you all that I understood how very much he loved us, each one of us, and how very much he cared for us. The name that he repeated most often was that of the youngest one because mother had died when she was still a baby. Finally it got through my head what he wanted and I said: "Yes, Dad, we'll take care of her, we'll do everything we can for her'. I made this promise in the name of all my brothers and sisters. This is the message I wanted to give you. Thank you." The church bell which had invited the Bandet descendants to church, rang again after the mass with peals of joy for nearly 5 minutes. Then quite a few people went to the graveyard to visit the tombs of the pioneers and all their beloved ones who are resting there until the final resurrection. Many returned to the Arena for some more visiting and supper, and by and by everyone left taking back their "tableau" which meant so much to them and which most will keep as a reminder of this wonderful weekend in Prud'homme. As one came in the Arena, one could see at the far end where the platform was, the pictures of Joseph Auguste Bandet and his five children with the names of their spouses and children, and on both sides all the "Tableaux" of the different families. There were bouquets of flowers on the platform and on the tables. All around, the arena was decorated with streamers of five different colors, one for each branch: pink, green, yellow, mauve, and blue. There were many video cameras, up to 5 or 6, taking pictures of the different activities all through the weekend so that we will have beautiful souvenirs for the future. It was with the ideas, the help and the cooperation of everyone that this beautiful weekend was made possible. Many want to meet again in five years. So, God willing, let us meet again and have another beautiful Bandet Family Reunion and it it is possible make it still nicer. There were a little over 400 Bandet descendants present this time, there will certainly be more present next time. |
