Food
Here's a list of my favourite foods. I'll try to keep this brief.
Meat
Steak, cooked rare to medium-rare, is the number one reason why I'll
never be able to become a vegetarian. Next-best reasons include
salmon, sushi/sashimi,
backyard barbecues, honey garlic chicken wings, and ribs.
Vegetables
Grilled eggplant and zucchini taste awesome. Eggplant cooked in
the Szechuan style, with spicy chili sauce, is excellent.
Of course, the great equalizer is Japanese tempura ... deep frying any
vegetable (even the dreaded broccoli) makes it taste great!
Pasta
I've enjoyed most types of pasta since I was young, with my favourites
being meat lasagna and fettucine Alfredo. In Florence I had the
privilege of enjoying the meat lasagna at La Certosa restaurant,
which I thought had to be the best in the world.
Interestingly, Ciro, who was there with me, claims that his mother
makes better lasagna.
Junk Food
This dangerous category includes Krispy Kreme donuts, Kernels
popcorn, The Decadent chocolate chip cookies, and everyone's
favourite, potato chips. I love these
foods, but I no longer buy them because I can't control myself
when I eat them. I open the box/bag and the next thing you know,
the container is half empty and I'm feeling sick. One option
is to buy smaller portions, but I can't help feeling ripped off
when I do that. So, I've given up on these foods permanently,
which is probably a good idea in the long run.
I haven't given up on cinnamon rolls and baked pretzels yet, though.
Desserts
I'm indifferent to most cakes, pies and pastries, and I don't
like cheesecake at all. Ice cream is pretty much the only dessert
I like. Which brings me to ...
Ice Cream from Ice Cream Trucks
Every time I see an ice cream truck, I buy ice cream from it.
I think that says it all.
Non-Alcoholic Beverages
Coke, iced tea, and orange juice all rate highly in my
books. But these beverages are pretty common, so I'll cut to the
other stuff.
Coffee will always be
part of my life after I started drinking it at UW. Even though I
prefer decaf these days, coffee has never failed
me when I needed a pick-me-up early in the morning.
Of the fancier drinks (drinks that actually cost more than a few dollars),
Tim Horton's iced cappuccino is my favourite. Bubble tea,
on the other hand, doesn't rank that high in my books, as it seems
overpriced. I've always thought of bubble tea as something to sip on
while chatting, not as something tasty and refreshing that I look forward
to consuming.
The last thing which requires mentioning here is cafe latte, but I'm
talking about the authentic stuff made in Italy, not the watered-down
imitations found here in Canada. Not only does it taste
heavenly, it's relatively inexpensive over there
(1 Euro at most places). I really miss cafe latte.
Alcoholic Beverages
Beers available in Canada that I like include Keith's and Moosehead.
When I was in Europe, I tried some Belgian beers, called Palm
and DeKoninck, and liked them a lot. Unfortunately they don't seem to
be sold in Ontario.
I'm not into hard liquor or anything with greater than 10% alcohol content.
Wine is okay, I suppose, but it takes a long time to finish a bottle by
yourself. So I never bother buying wine.
